As we all are pacing up and achieving our goals we are ignoring our health. Unlike earlier days one can observe number of diseases surrounding us such as Thyroid, Blood Pressure, Heart Problems etc. All these are provoked with our negligence towards keeping ourselves fit with the variance in eating habits and lack of exercise. Thyroid needs to be handled carefully, so is to thyroid diet. Let us look at the preference of dietitians.
Thyroid Diet Recommended by Dietitians
- Diet must contain appropriate amount of iodine which varies with different types of thyroid. For apt iodine content (Hypothyridism) consume sea food like seaweed (nori, wakame, and dulse), shrimp, dried prunes, lobster, cranberries etc. Moreover these provide other nutrients such as fiber, calcium, and vitamins A, B, C, E, and K.
- Overactive thyroid patients should prefer steamed or cooked green vegetables such as spinach, broccoli, kale, cauliflower and Brussels sprout because they have abilities to slow down thyroid and these promote Goiter when consumed in much large amount. Where as Hypothyroid patients must limit these items as they can block the thyroid’s ability to absorb iodine.
- Avoid Soy items because these block the body ability to absorb thyroid hormone.
- Eliminate possibilities of gluten triggered autoimmune thyroid Alter your diet respectively and check reports for the changes to plan your diet.
- Make your diet full of nutrients such as Selenium, Vitamin B, and zinc. Selenium helps in decreasing inflammation and helps proper functioning of thyroid. Consume fish, 1-2 Brazil nuts, a small handful of macadamia and hazel nuts (daily) can fulfill your nutrient requirements.
- The omega-3 fatty acids in wild salmon, trout, tuna, or sardines etc. helps in avoiding inflammation, heart diseases and increase immunity; faced by patients suffering unmanaged Hypothyroidism due to increased levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL). One can also consume blueberries, cherries, sweet potatoes, and green peppers which are rich in antioxidants.
- Hypothyroid patients are advised to take whole-grain foods like cereal, bread, pasta, and rice due to high nutrient and fiber content which helps in reducing constipation. But thyroid medication must be taken several hours before or after consuming such food items.
- Always keep in mind too much iodine can degrade your health condition due to under or over activity (Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid respectively) and very little iodine can swell your thyroid gland (Goitre).
- Deficiency of Vitamin D is associated with Hashimoto’s disease (type of Hypothyroidism). To avoid such state consume fortified milk as it consists of vitamin D, calcium, protein, and iodine. Avoid gluten and consume yogurt because it can regulate gut issues like heartburn due to the bacteria present in it.
- Hyperthyroidism drains out your energy, so consume beans as it consists of protein, antioxidants, complex carbohydrates, and loads of vitamins, minerals, high fiber content (which helps in resolving constipation issues of Hypothyroidism).
- It is advised to have chlorophyll shot upon waking up as it works as an energy booster and assists in removing heavy metals that can inhibit thyroid functionality.
- Maca can be highly beneficial as it balances hypothalamus and pituitary gland, because they release TRH (thyroid-releasing hormone) and TSH respectively which regulate thyroxine levels. It also includes zinc, B vitamins and iron- prerequisites for production of thyroid.
- Choose a diet with contents like low fat, low calorie spread and avoid high salt intake and cut down on more consumption of fats & sugars in form of cakes, biscuits, chocolate.
- Food items rich in calcium and supplement medication must be consumed with a gap of at least four hours as it can interfere in absorption of levothyroxine.
- Avoid high consumption of iodine as it will be of no use, if one is taking thyroid hormone such as levothyroxine for Hypothyroidism or for Goitre.
- Hypothyroid patients are expected to avoid high iodine content as it will worsen the condition and sometimes can invoke Hyperthyroidism in some people.
