  1. Emotional support– delivering and taking care of a baby takes a toll on the physical and mental well being of a woman. She needs time to recover from this. Emotional support from spouse, family and friends is of prime importance to make the woman realize that she isn’t alone in this and that she has all the help that she may need.
  2. Talk it out– feeling low and blue but not sure what to do about it? Well the easiest solution is to talk about it. Talk to a friend, a family member, or even write it out in your personal diary. Letting out those feelings can help you release steam and cool down.
  3. Counseling– taking help from a doctor, a psychologist or help groups are other ways to treat depression. Talking about it and discussing your problems with a professional body can be helpful.
  4. Get in touch with new mothers– social media these days has opened up so many new avenues for us. Connect with other new mothers who might be sailing in the same boat as you. Talk to them and listen to what they also might have to say.
  5. Ample rest– once you become a mother, a lot of us are given the advice of catching up on sleep when the baby sleeps. It is actually true. Every other work can wait. Get those precious minutes and hours of sleep and rest every time your baby is resting.
  6. Self care– a new mother probably doesn’t remember the last time she cared for herself. It is imperative to take time out for oneself even after the baby arrives. Your baby is your priority but that priority can be taken care of only when you yourself are in the perfect state. Therefore, do some exercises, wear that dress you have been waiting to wear for months now, go out with your friends, have a cup of tea in peace and spend some time in caring for yourself.
  7. Take help from family and friends– that little human in your hands is your creation and you might feel a certain sense of possessiveness about it. Hand over the baby to a family member once in a while so that you can just breathe in peace for some time. There is absolutely no harm in taking help from others. There is no doubt that a mother is a superwoman. But sometimes, that superwoman also needs to put her shield down and rest under her cape.
  8. Avoid any kind of alcohol or any substance abuse that can exaggerate these mood issues.
  9. Medications– certain anti depressants have been found to be helpful during post partum depression although these should be taken only in severe cases and as the last resort. Hence they have been mentioned towards the bottom of the list.
  10. Hospitalization– in very severe cases, a person may be hospitalized for the treatment of depression. In such cases a combination of anti depressants and psychotherapy may be given. Electro convulsive therapy may also be given in certain cases.

We expect a woman to be in her happiest ever state after her baby is born. So for some it is difficult to understand why someone would be depressed after they waited for nine months for that bundle of joy to come into their arms.
