Alcohol Use Disorder | How Alcohol adds up to Depression?

Alcohol Use Disorder

Alcohol intake in an amount that makes the person vulnerable to physical, mental and social problems is termed as Alcohol Use Disorder.

Whereas, depression is a state of low mood over a prolonged period that causes one to have a poor outlook on life. The depressed person may feel sad, anxious, hopeless, helpless, guilty, angry, worthless, irritable or ashamed of something. He/She starts exaggerating the problems and understating the good situations. Things turn worse when people start self-medication through alcohol to come out of their worriments.

Studies reveal that

one-third of the crest-fallen people also have Alcohol Use Disorder.

Also, women are twice more likely than men to start consuming alcohol in tough times and also over-doing drinking.

The question usually put up is “Whether regular drinking leads to depression or are depressed people more likely to drink too much?”

Well! Both are possible.

Alcohol adversely affects our brain and generates mood vacillations. Alcohol is deceptive at first. It’s consumption gives rise to chemical changes in our brain making us feel better and relaxed in first go. Later on, it starts to depress our brain’s part, known for regulation of our mood. Everything gets abominable with time and it may range from depression and memory loss to suicide attempts.

How Alcohol Adds Up To Depression?

  • Alcohol decreases the tolerance power and makes an individual short tempered, affecting the relationships to great extent.
  • Drinkers develop irresponsible, apathetic and everything-may-go-to-hell kind of attitude that makes job issues worse.
  • They are unable to take informed and rational decisions for which they later on have to regret.
  • Alcohol negatively affects sleep and deep-sleep-deprivation may further cause depression as the body is not able to receive it’s much-needed rest to restore energy.
  • It may even lead to suicide attempts due to impaired judgement, impulsiveness, disinhibition etc.

How To Cope Up With Alcohol And Depression?

  • Consult Doctor- Medication may solve the purpose to much extent. Doctor’s guidance is must as people having alcohol use disorder find it challenging to go through the changes that take place while leaving alcohol and coming out of depression.
  • Exercise- Take out at least an hour to re-freshen up. Physical activity encourages the production of endorphins that is a mood regulating harmone (feel-good harmone). Exercise would lighten up your mood as well as help your brain to work effectively.
  • Practice Self-love- The feeling of love is divine. Self-love is a way to feel special whenever you need it the most. If you love yourself unconditionally, the question of being depressed or consuming alcohol won’t ever arise.
  • Be In Nature’s Lap- Nature is the supreme heeler. All the negativity escapes out when freshness flows in. Experience that power of nature.
  • Yoga And Meditation- Their combination relaxes mind and body. Positive thoughts conquer our mind. Yoga and meditation include breath control that is quite useful to reduce stress.
  • Talk To Your People- It’s magical how a few words from loved ones make you feel so empowered. Instead of entering a web, talk to your favorites about the problems you are facing. There’s a solution for each and everything.
  • Keep Yourself Engaged- Love whatever you do and do whatever you love. Keep yourself busy enough to avoid depressing thoughts.

Remember always, it’s not the events of our life that shape our reality but our beliefs as to what those events mean. Just evaluate your miseries and come out of them rather than depending upon alcohol. Think about your life, your dreams and your loved ones and make a better world for them and oneself.

I am a dreamer, evolver and light bringer with passion for reading and writing. Also, a self-love preacher who celebrates the beauty and freedom of being true to oneself.
